Hillary Morin Peterson is a former University of Maine student that is now conducting thesis work in collaboration with the Maine Forest Service.
That's how she discovered the tiny, no-stinging species of wasp. Peterson named it ormocerus dirigoius in honor of Maine's motto Dirigo which means "I lead" in Latin.
The new specieies of wasp was swept up while she was collecting specimens of invasive winter moths that have invaded Maine from the south in recent in recent years.
The new discovery is detailed in a recently published paper.
